In the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland, two visionary brothers founded Bru-Bu Werke AG in 1878. Fast forward to the late 1970s, when Dr. Horst Wiethüchter, the former Chairman of Reemtsma Cigarettes, recognized the potential in Bru-Bu Werke AG. He saw beyond the company’s current offerings, envisioning a high-end brand that would redefine the pipe industry. Under his leadership, the company was renamed Bentley Pipe Company, a nod to the prestigious Bentley name that was already part of Bru-Bu's portfolio.

 

The Craft of a Master
In the early 1980s, Dr. Wiethüchter made a pivotal decision by hiring a young, talented pipe maker named Hans Nielsen, better known in the industry as "Former." A true perfectionist and artist, Former brought a level of precision and artistry to Bentley that elevated the brand to new heights. His clean, classic pipe designs became synonymous with Bentley’s commitment to elegance and quality. Over his illustrious career, Former’s pipes became highly sought after, commanding prices well over €1,000. Although he parted ways with Bentley around 2000, his legacy of excellence remains deeply ingrained in the brand.

 

The Tobacco Revolution
As Bentley continued to evolve, so did its product offerings. In the early 2000s, Bentley Pipe Company sought the expertise of the Schuster family, renowned for their blending and tobacco knowledge. This partnership resulted in the creation of Bentley’s first tobacco blends, further cementing the brand’s reputation for quality.

 

A New Era
Tragedy struck when Dr. Wiethüchter's son passed away in a car accident, leaving the family business without a successor. In 2011, Martin Schuster, recognizing the strong reputation and the enduring legacy of the Bentley name, acquired the company. Under his leadership, Bentley underwent a brand renaissance, with a renewed design and an expanded product portfolio that now included not just pipes and pipe tobacco, but also cigarillos and spirits.

 

The Green Line Launch
In 2017, Bentley introduced a new line of cigars known as the Green Line, marking its official entry into the world of premium cigars. This line was met with acclaim and solidified Bentley’s position as a versatile and luxurious brand in the global tobacco market.

 

A Global Presence
Today, Bentley products are available in 25 countries, a testament to the brand’s global appeal and enduring commitment to quality. In August 2024, Bentley Tobacco took a significant step by teaming up with Jonathan M.
